ICAVL-Accredited Diagnostic Neurosonology Laboratory

Staffed by a board-certified neurologist, neurosonologist and registered vascular technologists, Michigan Neurology Institute’s neurosonology laboratory is one of the few in southeast Michigan accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). The ICAVL is dedicated to promoting high-quality noninvasive vascular diagnostic testing in the delivery of health care by providing a peer review process of laboratory accreditation.

Michigan Neurology Institute offers carotid Doppler ultrasound and transcranial Doppler ultrasound testing.

carotidCarotid Doppler Ultrasound

Carotid Doppler Ultrasound (CDUS): A non-invasive test that uses sound waves to measure the flow of blood through the large carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain. The CDUS is a painless and harmless test that utilizes a handheld transducer which is passed lightly over the skin above a blood vessel. The transducer sends and receives sound waves that bounce off the blood cells within the arteries. A computer then processes the information from the reflected sound waves and provides detailed information regarding the velocity of blood flow and the diameter of the arterial lumen. Arteriosclerosis resulting in the narrowing of the carotid arteries can lead to stroke. The results of this test help doctors determine stroke risk as well as the appropriate stroke preventative measures.

transcranialTranscranial Doppler Ultrasound

Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound (TCD): Utilizing the same technology as the CDUS, this non-invasive method helps estimate the blood flow velocities in the large intracranial arteries known as the Circle of Willis, as well as the arteries at the base of the brain (vertebral-basilar system). TCD is used to evaluate patients with possible narrowing of intracranial blood vessels as well as other forms of cerebrovascular disease.
